New Chapter Unfolds for Derrick White
As Derrick White stood on the practice courts this past Sunday, it marked the beginning of yet another unexpected chapter in his eventful basketball journey. Arriving at 2:30 a.m. after a long flight from the U.S., White was promptly called up to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard, thrusting him into a familiar role once again.
White's call-up to Team USA came at a time when he had planned to enjoy a well-deserved family vacation in Cabo. Instead, the versatile guard finds himself on familiar ground, harking back to a similar situation in 2019. That year, White was a last-minute addition to the senior team for the World Cup in China, having secured the final roster spot after higher-profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young withdrew.
Reflecting on those whirlwind events, White shared his thoughts on the new opportunity. "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable," he said. "I feel (now) like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."
White's recent call-up occurred while he was in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp. Despite the unexpected nature of his inclusion, White's recent professional achievements suggest he is more than up for the challenge. Having recently agreed to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics, White's stability and confidence are evident.
Reuniting with Team USA
The Celtics' NBA title last month marked the pinnacle of a season highlighted by White's defensive versatility and high-impact plays. Now, he reunites with Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum in representing Team USA, alongside former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, who now serves as an assistant coach for the national team.
Jayson Tatum expressed his enthusiasm about White's addition to the team. "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," Tatum said, underscoring the invaluable experience White brings to the national squad.
Preparing for the Challenge
Forward Kevin Durant’s absence from Monday's exhibition game against Australia, due to a strained calf, reiterates the unpredictable nature of international basketball competitions. Coach Steve Kerr mentioned that Durant did not have contact at practice and was focusing on shooting drills and rehab work, further underscoring the significance of adaptable players like White.
White's defensive prowess, championship experience, and proven adaptability make him a treasured asset for Team USA as they prepare for the challenges ahead. His presence is a reassuring element for the team’s coaches and fellow players, providing a blend of consistency and high-level performance on the international stage.
As Derrick White gears up for this latest chapter, one thing is clear: his journey, marked by unexpected turns, resilience, and distinguished accomplishments, continues to captivate and inspire those who follow his career.
