Marquette King Aims for NFL Return, Confident in His Skills

Punter Marquette King is on a mission. At 35 years old, the seasoned punter is steadfast in his quest to return to the NFL, believing fervently in his abilities and experience.

A Storied Journey

King's NFL journey began in 2012 when he was signed by the Oakland Raiders. Over the course of six seasons with the Raiders, King established himself as one of the league's premier punters. In 2014, he led the NFL in punting yards and even notched a career-long punt of 72 yards. During his tenure with the Raiders, he played in 84 games, delivering 446 punts for an impressive 20,822 yards, with 163 of those kicks landing inside the 20-yard line.

However, King's career took a detour in 2018 when he signed a three-year, $7 million contract with the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, his time in Denver was cut short due to a thigh injury that placed him on injured reserve by October 2018. The Broncos released him shortly after, casting uncertainty over his professional future.

Life After the NFL

Reflecting a resilience that has been the hallmark of his career, King didn't let the setback deter him. Instead, he continued to showcase his talent in alternative leagues. Joining the XFL in 2020, he led the league in punting yards, further reinforcing his reputation as a top-tier punter. Most recently, King became an XFL champion in 2023, adding another milestone to his accomplished career.

Currently, King has showcased his skills with the Arlington Renegades, earning the honor of All-UFL Punter in a league known for its challenging punting conditions. Yet, despite his accolades and performances, King noted that he was not among the players who transitioned from the UFL to the NFL following its inaugural season. But King remains undeterred.

Eyes on an NFL Comeback

Firm in his belief, King recently posted a video on social media showcasing one of his punts, aimed at catching the eyes of NFL scouts and teams. “You can’t tell me that there are 32 punters better than me,” King declared. “All-UFL Punter in a league where punting isn’t easy at all! I’m manifesting a call from an NFL team again soon.”

With the NFL season fast approaching, King is more focused than ever on proving his worth. His objective is clear: to reclaim his place in the league in 2024. Through persistence, he aims to convert his UFL, XFL, and previous NFL successes into another chance on the NFL stage.

A Testament to Perseverance

King's journey is a testament to resilience and persistence in professional sports. From leading the NFL in punting yards to overcoming injuries, and excelling in multiple football leagues, his journey reflects an undying love for the sport and relentless pursuit of excellence. As he eyes a return to the NFL, Marquette King stands poised and ready, embodying the spirit of an athlete who refuses to be counted out. Whether his manifestation of a call from an NFL team materializes, one thing is certain: King’s legacy as one of football’s top punters endures.
