Nakobe Dean’s Path to Prominence
Sunday marked a crucial turning point in the career of Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean. Following a summer marred by a foot injury, Dean's standout performance this past Sunday has cemented his status as a player to watch this season.
Handed a starting linebacker role last year, Dean is now earning his place the hard way. Despite the challenges, he has gradually worked his way back into first-team reps, showcasing his resilience and determination. His offseason regimen was especially grueling, training five days a week until the start of training camp. "I didn't have a day off, I didn't have an offseason. It was five days a week until training camp started as far as getting that foot right, getting better. It's like I'm not back, I'm better," Dean remarked.
Dean’s recent performances have drawn significant attention and praise. During Saturday's practice, on the first play of 11-on-11s, he laid out running back Will Shipley after a pass reception, followed by breaking up a pass aimed at DeVonta Smith. These moments epitomize the physical aggressiveness Dean has brought to the Eagles defense, fulfilling the team's yearning for more physical plays.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's philosophy has notably benefitted Dean, as he has embraced a more physical playing style under Fangio's guidance. "He made it a main emphasis of block destruction, of blitzing because Vic's been calling our number, and tackling is a universal thing. We don't want no missed tackles, definitely not at the linebacker position," Dean explained. This season, under the watchful eye of new linebackers coach Bobby King, Dean is closer than ever to securing that starting linebacker position for Week 1.
Teamwork and synergy have also been pivotal. Dean has teamed up with Devin White, and Fangio’s encouragement has bolstered his progress. The presence of Bobby King has enabled Dean to fully embrace his physical playing style. "Offensive guys have embraced it. They embraced the toughness. They want a feel. The offensive starters, they haven't played in the preseason (games). So the first time they get hit, they don't want it to be Week 1," Dean said.
Dean’s versatility as a linebacker is another asset, allowing him to cover, fill the A-gap, and blitz the quarterback. His approach to training camp reflects his dedication to these skills. "The type of linebacker I am, I feel like you need to be able to do everything. You need to be able to cover, you need to be able to fill that A-gap, you need to be able to blitz the quarterback. And I feel like those are things I do good," Dean stated confidently.
Throughout his three-year NFL career, Dean has navigated the highs and lows with remarkable tenacity. His dedication to his craft is evident in his relentless pursuit of improvement and success. "I want to play. And I want to be the first one that plays. But I can't control that. The only thing I can control is what I come out here and do every day, work hard and continue to get better," he said.
Dean’s camp performance aligns seamlessly with his expectations for himself. His commitment to adding a physical edge to every play is well-received, even during times when tackling is reduced in camp. "We don't tackle as much in camp, so you try to thud as much as you can. In past years, I feel like I two-handed touch always. I want to thud," Dean commented.
Nakobe Dean’s journey is a testament to hard work, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Dean as he steps into a role he has fought hard to earn. His story is one of grit and determination, and it’s clear that Dean is poised to make a significant impact on the field for the Philadelphia Eagles.
