Celebrini Shines in San Jose Sharks Development Camp
As the San Jose Sharks' development camp wrapped up a recent Tuesday morning, all eyes were on Macklin Celebrini, the franchise's first-ever No. 1 overall draft pick. The 18-year-old made an impressive debut at Sharks Ice in San Jose, leaving fans and coaches alike buzzing with anticipation.
Celebrini’s arrival is nothing short of historic for the Sharks. He's not only young but incredibly talented, showing why he was selected first overall in the draft. Last season, he scored a staggering 32 goals and 32 assists in 38 games as a freshman at Boston University, earning himself the prestigious Hobey Baker Award. However, despite his remarkable freshman year, he is still weighing his options for the coming season.
"It's coming up. I'll make the decision pretty quick here. Just trying to enjoy this camp, and after that I guess it's time to make a decision," Celebrini said about his plans, whether to play for the Sharks or return to Boston University.
John McCarthy, the head coach of the San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks' AHL affiliate, was notably impressed with Celebrini’s performance during the camp.
"Really good. He was super competitive on pucks. I thought that's what stood out to me the most," McCarthy commented. His praise didn’t stop at Celebrini’s ability on the ice. "I think he is a mature kid. I know a lot of people (at Boston University), and talking to them about him, as impressive as he is as a player and his skill level, they're equally as impressed as a person. The way that he carries himself, the way that he goes about his business, it's high end, which is why he went first overall."
Family Connections and Community Support
Celebrini isn’t entirely new to Northern California. He moved to the area in 2018 and played with the Junior Sharks U-14 team in 2019. His father, Rick Celebrini, serves as the vice president of player health and performance for the Golden State Warriors, adding a familiar touch to Macklin’s new surroundings.
"It's nice to be wanted. It's been good. They were out there supporting today. From everything I've heard, they are some of the best fans in the league. I'm excited to start playing in front of them," Celebrini remarked about the support from Sharks fans.
Optimistic Future Despite Past Struggles
The Sharks, who finished last season with a disappointing 19-54-9 record, are looking for a turnaround, and Celebrini’s potential decision to stay could play a crucial role. The annual prospect scrimmage, set for Thursday, will be another opportunity for Celebrini to showcase his skills and further solidify his place in the team.
"It's been fun. It's been a long process throughout the draft and stuff, but now it's when the fun begins. You just get to skate, play hockey and just have fun with the guys," he shared. This excitement is palpable, not just for him but for the Sharks organization and its supporters.
While Celebrini's future plans remain undecided, McCarthy remains focused on the tangible skills he brings to the table. "I think he's a really, really talented, really good hockey player. As far as the other stuff, that's kind of above me," McCarthy said, acknowledging Celebrini’s potential long-term impact.
Celebrini himself is feeling optimistic about the Sharks' future. "We're moving in the right direction. There's so many players getting ready to make their debut, especially with the signings that we've made. It's an exciting time," he said, hinting at a new era for the team.
As the development camp drew to a close, the anticipation for Macklin Celebrini’s decision continues to build. Will he lace up his skates for the Sharks this season, or will Boston University get another year of his prodigious talent? One thing is certain: the young star’s journey is just beginning, and the hockey world is eagerly watching.
